1. Passive vs. Active Fire Protection Systems

Comprehensive fire safety engineering requires the harmonious integration of both passive and active protective measures:

  • Passive Fire Protection (PFP): Includes compartmentalization, fire-resistant barriers, fire doors, smoke dampers, and intumescent structural coatings that limit the spread of fire and maintain structural integrity during evacuation.
  • Active Fire Protection (AFP): Involves automatic detection, alarm systems, emergency water storage, hydrants, and automatic sprinkler systems that actively extinguish or suppress fire outbreaks.

2. Core Components of an Industrial Fire Protection System

In large facilities, an industrial fire safety setup incorporates several vital subsystems:

A. Dedicated Fire Water Storage & Pumping Unit: Sized to maintain pressure for a minimum of 45–120 minutes of continuous full discharge.

B. Fire Alarm & Detection Control Panels (FACP): Addressable smoke, heat, and flame detectors linked to central monitoring.

C. Pillar Hydrant & Hose Reel Networks: Strategically positioned indoor and outdoor hydrants ensuring 100% perimeter and floor coverage.

D. Automated Sprinkler & Foam Suppression: Rapid-response wet/dry pipe sprinkler grids and specialized foam deluge systems for chemical or flammable fuel zones.

3. Compliance, Permitting & Testing (RIKSA UJI)

Installing fire safety hardware is only half the battle. Regular inspection, hydrostatic pressure testing, flow rate measurement, and compliance certification through official Indonesian safety bodies (Kemenaker / Dinas Penanggulangan Kebakaran dan Penyelamatan) are legally mandated before a building can receive its Sertifikat Laik Fungsi (SLF).
